The F.A.S.T. is an integral part of Solid Waste Reduction at DES. Members of the PTA/F.A.S.T.
Clothing Drive In 2016, the F.A.S.T. ran a clothing and household goods drive at SLES. Members of the F.A.S.T. as well as students held several collections before, after and during school hours then took all the items to be reused or recycled. A total of 4,706 lbs. of goods were kept out of the landfill. Toner & Inkjet Cartridge Recycling A member of the F.A.S.T. collects empty toner and ink cartridges from staff, families and community members. They are then sent to Funding Factory for recycling. Around 30 empty toner and ink cartridges are sent approximately 3 times a year. Profits from the recycling help support the SLES Media Center. Glue and Marker Recycling Empty glue sticks and markers collected by students are taken to the landfill by F.A.S.T. members for recycling with hard plastics. |

Letter to Governor
In December 2016, SLES 5th graders wrote to Governor Larry Hogan to express their concerns about oyster dredging. In their letters, like the example displayed, they hope to save the oyster population and protect their sanctuaries. |
