Terrapin Unit
Each year 3rd grade at SLES adopts a baby terrapin. They care for the terrapin until it is ready to be released into its habitat. Squirtle the Turtle's home at SLES is in a prime location and she crosses paths with 3rd graders on a daily basis. She is one of the family and students love to watch her swim and walk. In the Spring they learn about terrapins and have a field trip to Flag Ponds Nature Park to investigate their habitat. In these photos, Squirtle's length and weight are checked. She started at 14 grams at the beginning of the school year and as of March 2017 she was up to 104 grams. |
Fossils Field Trip
Each year, SLES 4th graders visit Calvert Marine Museum. They investigate fossils and learn about species, both currently and extinct, that lived in the area. They go into depth about the changing landform of Calvert County and the surrounding Chesapeake Bay back to pre-historic times. |
Endangered Species Research Project
For an ELA project, SLES 5th Graders chose an endangered species to study. They researched several facts about the species including possible causes of endangerment. They then presented their findings visually. These examples on the blue marlin and snow leopard were presented in 2016. |
