The Glue Stick and Writing Instrument recycling program at SLES was initiated during the 2016-17 school year. Fifth grade students colored labels for the collection bins that were placed in each classroom. Students in the Functional Skills class collect and sort the empty glue and writing instruments on a weekly basis. As of January 2017, 24.6 lbs of glue sticks and 7.3 lbs of markers have been collected and recycled.
Laptop Packaging Repurposed
The SLES Media Center has repurposed laptop packaging to be used as building blocks in its Makers Space.
Classroom Recycling
Fifth graders wrote letters to the Calvert County Public Schools Energy and Environmental Specialist to request desk side recycling bins for each classroom of the school. Once received, the students distributed the bins to each classroom and placed them next to the trash can to encourage recycling.
Clothing Drive
Students help collect used clothing during the F.A.S.T. clothing drive. 4,706 lbs. of clothing was collected and saved from the landfill.
SLES Students are Informed
Every Wednesday is Waste Not Wednesday at SLES. Students include Go Green tips on the morning announcements. As an example, the script from January 4, 2017 encourages reusing water bottles and plastic grocery bags.
